The handpan is a millennium percussion instrument that not only produces soothing and healing tones but can also deliver dynamic rhythms.
This course is designed to introduce beginners to the basic techniques of the handpan and teach them how to play relaxing music. Using the three core elements of music—melody, harmony, and rhythm—as a foundation, participants will learn the fundamentals of handpan music. The course includes basic music theory, as well as simple improvisation and composition techniques, enabling students to gradually learn to play relaxing music on handpan.

 

Practicing the handpan is not just an exploration of sound. it is also a form of self-awareness training, strengthening the connection between body and mind. With effective practice, students can find inner peace amidst their busy lives, achieving self-healing through handpan music.

 

Whether your goal is to use the handpan in the realm of mindfulness or music performance, this course will provide you with a solid foundation and guide you on your journey of exploring handpan music.

    • A brief history and the sound mechanics of the handpan
  2. Basic Playing Techniques
    • Techniques for playing melodies
    • Coordination between both hands
    • Rhythmic playing methods
  3. Fundamental Music Knowledge
    • The importance of rhythm in relaxing music
    • Combining melody and harmony
    • Chord progressions on the handpan
    • Techniques for improvisation and composition
  4. Practical Exercises
    • Improvised ensemble playing
    • Collaborative composition

Ting Ho-fung

Ting Ho-fung is a musician with a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the Department of Physics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is a handpan performer, educator, and craftsman, with nearly twenty years of experience in pop piano performance. In 2018, he founded Panlab, the first studio in Hong Kong dedicated to handpan production and education.

 

In recent years, Ting Ho-fung has actively promoted handpan music across various universities and institutions. He has contributed to the arrangements and recordings for albums such as “Modern Classic 2010-2020” by Chan Fai Young and Terence Siufay, as well as “Direction” by Margaret Cheung. He has showcased his skills as a handpan performer and craftsman on ViuTV shows including “演奏1TAKE過”, “晚吹-音樂系” and “CHILL CLUB Annual Recommendations 23/24”. In 2023, he was a guest performer at the Asia Yoga Conference and regularly participates in events organized by Dharma Drum Mountain to help individuals relax through handpan music. Additionally, he has been invited to perform at handpan music festivals in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and Hiroshima, Japan, in 2023 and 2024.
