The Art of Alignment with Joan Jolliffe

ABOUT

This hands-on yoga workshop designed to help you to refine your alignment with intention and precision—using supportive props like a blanket, chair, blocks, and straps. Over four Saturday mornings, we’ll explore how to set up, progress, regress, and practice safely based on your body type, mobility, and any limitations.

Each session is 2 hours long, running from 29 August to 19 September. Teacher Joan will guide you through practical alignment breakdowns and share the benefits and stories behind each asana—so you understand not only how to do the pose, but why it matters.

Focus of the workshop

  • Breaking down “HOW” to do specific asana step-by-step
  • Progressions and regressions for different bodies and limitations
  • Using props thoughtfully (not as a shortcut—as a tool to learn alignment)
  • Building confidence in your movement with clearer cues and safer options
  • Understanding the benefits and deeper meaning of each pose through Joan’s teaching

Day 1, 29 August: Sun Salutations A, B, C / Surya Namaskar

Learn how to refine alignment through each phase of the flow, including chaturanga ( low push up ), upward dog ( Urdhva Mukha Svanasana ), downward dog ( Adho Mukha Svanasana )…etc.   We’ll use props to support length, stability, and breath, helping you practice sun salutations with improved mechanics and less strain—while making the flow accessible and sustainable.

Day 2, 5 September: Standing Asana

Standing poses often reveal everything: balance, strength, and alignment habits. We’ll work on asana including warrior poses ( virabhadrasana 1,2, 3 ), triangle pose ( Uttitha trikonasana ); single leg balance poses like half moon pose and variations ( ardha chandrasana ), dancer pose ( natarajasana )…etc.

Joan will simplify and explain body mechanics and movement integration in how to set your foundation, refine posture, and explore safer variations—using blocks, straps, and the chair to help you learn correct engagement without forcing your range.

Day 3, 12 September: Backbending Asana

Backbends can feel powerful, but they need structure. Joan will guide you through alignment principles that protect the spine and support healthy extension—progressing gradually and offering regression options for people with limited mobility or discomfort.

Asana including Camel ( Ustrasana ), Urdhva Dhanurasana ( Wheel ), Dhanurasana ( Bow ), King pigeon ( Kapotasana ) will be covered.  Progressions of certain poses might be offered for students ( e.g. forearm wheel, full bow… )

Day 4, 19 September: Arm Balance and Inversion

This day focuses on learning the mechanics behind arm balances and inversions. We’ll break down key setups including shoulder girdle stability and core control; build strength and coordination step-by-step and use props to create stability while you explore the safest pathways toward more advanced expressions.    Asana including crow ( bakasana ) and variations ( e.g. one legged crow, side crow ), flying pigeon ( Eka Pada Galavasana ) and headstand ( sirsasana 1 and 2 ) will be covered.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners who wants to refine their practice !!!
