Sacred Revelry: A Bhutan Tshechu Journey with Ocean Liang
18-24 September 2026 | Bhutan
DESCRIPTION
About Tshechu
Tshechu is Bhutan’s most sacred and vibrant religious festival, held to honour Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. During this joyous occasion, locals dress in their finest traditional attire, gather with family for picnics, and celebrate with dance, music, and deep devotion.
Key Experiences:
-
Masked Dances (Cham): Monks wearing intricate, colourful masks perform sacred dances that convey ancient teachings and bestow blessings. Witnessing these dances is believed to bring spiritual merit and awakening.
-
Thongdrel (Giant Scroll Unveiling): On the final morning of the festival, a giant silk thangka (religious scroll) is unfurled at dawn. It is said that a single glance at the Thongdrel cleanses the viewer of sin and plants the seeds of enlightenment.
Our Journey
This retreat extends our yoga practice into the sacred landscape of Bhutan — under the morning light of Paro Dzong, beside the flowing Mo Chhu River, and within sight of the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery.
Here, we unroll our mats. Breath and awareness synchronise. Postures resonate with the rhythm of the masked dances. Each meditation becomes deeper and more sacred under the blessing of Guru Rinpoche himself.

Ocean’s passion for yoga began at the age of 20. She first wanted to build strength and flexibility but found yoga practice to be a great tool for improving her concentration and memory. As she became a dedicated practitioner, she started to realise how yoga practice was the guidance she needed to understand her soul within.
Yoga has led her to all corners of the globe studying with the world’s foremost teachers including Stephen Thomas, Patrick Creelman and David Swenson. She joined PURE Yoga’s teaching team in 2006 and has always enjoyed sharing her yoga experiences as an instructor and deepening her self-practice as a student.
Ocean truly believes that her mission is not only to share her yoga experience but also to help students develop a mindful and steady practice – one that gives them full freedom and courage to seek inner and outer harmony and balance on and off the yoga mat.
