Still Tired? How HK’s Humidity is Ruining Your Sleep

Sleeping for eight hours but still waking up exhausted is a frustrating (yet common) reality for many Hong Kongers.

As the city transitions into its notoriously damp spring season, heavy humidity actively disrupts your body’s ability to achieve deep, restorative sleep.

The Humidity Sleep Trap

High humidity levels physically block sweat from evaporating off your skin.

Because the body relies on this evaporation to lower its core temperature—a necessary step for melatonin production and deep sleep—a damp bedroom essentially traps heat.

If your body cannot adequately cool down, your brain remains stuck in lighter sleep stages, causing the grogginess often referred to locally as “spring fatigue”.

Bedroom Micro-Climate Hacks

Optimising your indoor environment is the best defence against unpredictable coastal weather.

Set your air conditioning to around 21°C and your dehumidifier to 40-50%. This creates a micro-climate that removes excess moisture while supporting a natural drop in your body temperature.

You can also switch to highly breathable bedding materials like linen or bamboo. These fabrics pull sweat away from the body to promote better nighttime airflow.

Regulating Your Temperature

Taking a warm shower 90 minutes before bedtime might sound counterintuitive in a hot climate, but it is highly effective.

The warm water brings blood to the surface of the skin. Once you step out, it triggers a rapid cool-down in your core temperature, effectively signalling to your brain that it’s time to rest.

You can also incorporate a warm foot bath before bed to calm the nervous system and draw heat away from your head.

Somatic Nervous System Release

Life in a high-stress city means that mental unwinding is just as important as physical cooling.
Spending five minutes doing Yoga Nidra or a gentle “legs up the wall” pose physically shifts your nervous system out of “fight or flight” mode.

Deep breathing and somatic stretching help restore emotional balance and clear the mental fog often associated with humid weather.
