During autumn, physical stiffness and mental exhaustion often peak together. Shorter days, changing weather and year-end deadlines frequently overstimulate the autonomic nervous system—manifesting as tight shoulders, a stiff lower back and restless sleep.
Incorporating these three mindful movement principles into your October routine helps restore harmony to both body and mind:
1. Practise Spinal Decompression Daily
Hours spent sitting and hunching against the chill naturally compress the intervertebral discs in your spine. Simple, passive inversions (such as placing your legs up the wall) or gentle, supported backbends reverse gravitational pressure. These shapes encourage blood flow back to the heart, release lower back compression, and signal to your brain that it is safe to wind down.
2. Hydrate Your Fascia Through Micro-Movements
Fascia—the connective tissue matrix wrapping every muscle and organ—becomes dry and sticky when kept in static positions or exposed to cooler weather. Small, multi-directional rhythmic movements (like gentle pelvic tilts, cat-cow oscillations and slow wrist rolls) lubricate this tissue, restoring fluid movement and easing chronic joint aches.
3. Use the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique to Reset Before Sleep
If your mind is still racing when your head hits the pillow, your autonomic nervous system needs a manual override. Try the 4-7-8 method: inhale quietly through your nose for 4 counts, hold your breath for 7 counts, and exhale completely through your mouth with a soft sound for 8 counts. Repeating this cycle for 4 to 5 rounds activates your parasympathetic nervous system, preparing your body for deep, cell-regenerating sleep throughout autumn.
