Beyond the Stretch: 2 Yoga Practices to Sharpen Focus & Balance Your Nervous System

Many people view yoga as a way to loosen tight muscles. However, its original anatomical focus was to regulate the mind and stabilise the nervous system. With work demands, screen time and mental distractions aplenty, the autonomic nervous system becomes overstimulated — resulting in a scrambled head, poor sleep and mental exhaustion.

Integrating targeted breathwork and grounding postures into your routine provides a powerful tool for mental clarity and emotional equilibrium.

1. Balance the Hemispheres with Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

The way we breathe directly influences our brain state and autonomic nervous system. Shallow, asymmetrical breathing patterns often reflect—and reinforce—heightened mental anxiety.

How to apply it: Practise Nadi Shodhana daily before working or meditating. Sit comfortably with an upright spine. Using your right thumb, close your right nostril and inhale deeply through the left for 4 counts. Close the left nostril with your ring finger, release the right, and exhale slowly for 4 counts. Inhale through the right for 4 counts, close it, and exhale through the left. Repeat this cycle for 5-10 minutes. This practice balances the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, clearing mental fog and inducing immediate cognitive focus.

2. Shift Overstimulated Energy with Grounded Standing Postures

Racing minds naturally accumulate energy in the head and chest, causing shallow breathing, rounded posture and a sense of feeling ungrounded.

How to apply it: Incorporate static, grounding standing postures such as Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II), Chair Pose (Utkatasana) and Tree Pose (Vrksasana). Be sure to spread your toes wide and press all four corners of your feet into the floor while engaging your quadriceps and core. Holding these postures for 5 to 8 slow, deep breaths pulls energy down from the upper body, establishing physical stability that naturally translates into a calm, centred mind.
