Traditional fitness routines often focus exclusively on isolated muscular hypertrophy or long, steady cardio. While both have their place, they can leave you feeling stiff or unfit for multi-dimensional, real-world movement. Athletic functional training bridges the gap between aesthetic strength and high-performance agility.

Here are three sports science principles to help you move, lift and perform like an athlete this September.

1. Train Multi-Directional Power

Most gym movements occur in a single plane (forward and backward, such as squats, bench presses or running). But real-world athletic movement requires stability and strength across lateral (side-to-side) and rotational (transverse) planes.

How to apply it: Incorporate multi-planar exercises into your warm-ups or main sets. Add medicine ball rotational thows, lateral bounds and dumbbell suitcase lunges to engage dormant stabiliser muscles, protect your joints from acute injuries and build rotational power.

2. Prioritise Anti-Rotational Core Stiffness

How to apply it: Replace traditional spinal-flexion exercises (like sit-ups or crunches) with anti-rotational and bracing movements — e.g. Palloff Presses, Heavy Single-Arm Farmer’s Carries and Ab-Wheel Rollouts. As part of your routine, they will forge an unbreakable mid-section capable of protecting your lower back during heavy lifts.

3. Build Aerobic Capacity via High-Density Functional Intervals

To raise stamina without losing strength or speed, condition your cardiovascular system through high-intensity, low-impact functional intervals rather than long, monotonous cardio.

How to apply it: End your resistance workouts with a 10-minute high-density finisher. Alternate 30 seconds of maximum effort on a Sled Push, SkiErg or Assault Bike with 30 seconds of active recovery. This challenges both your anaerobic threshold and recovery speed, creating a true ‘hybrid’ athletic engine.
