Hand Balancing 201 with Marcel Erasmus

ABOUT

Handbalance 201 is a focused 6‑hour workshop for students ready to move beyond the basics and build reliable, safe handbalancing skills. Designed for motivated beginner to intermediate practitioners, the session emphasizes alignment, strength‑to‑skill progressions, and practical drills that translate directly into Hatha and Vinyasa classes. Participants will leave with repeatable cues, targeted exercises, and a short practice sequence to continue developing balance and confidence on the hands.

Intro and overview

This workshop picks up where introductory handbalance work leaves off. We’ll refine wrist, shoulder, and core alignment; develop efficient entry and exit strategies for common handstand variations; and practice balance management through micro‑adjustments and fall‑safes. The approach is technical, incremental, and safety‑first, with options and regressions so everybody can progress at a steady, sustainable pace.

What participants will gain

  • Foundational alignment for wrists, shoulders, hips, and spine specific to handstands and arm balances.
  • Strength and mobility drills that target the exact muscles and ranges needed for stable hand support.
  • Progressions and regressions for wall work, tuck and straddle entries, and basic press attempts.
  • Balance strategies including weight shifts, fingertip control, and breath‑based steadiness.
  • Safe falling and exit techniques to reduce fear and prevent injury.
  • A take‑home mini practice to reinforce gains between classes.

Workshop structure and timing

Class will consist of a 30-minute warm-up followed by 90-minute of targeted drills, conditioning, and skill practice. Form and technique are emphasized.

  • 15 minutes — Q&A and cooldown, troubleshooting, personalized cues, and recovery tips.

Marcel Erasmus

Marcel discovered yoga in 2012 while recovering from a skateboarding injury and it became a stabilising force in his life. To deepen his practice, he completed 200-hour teacher trainings in India and Hong Kong, and was influenced by Patrick Creelman and Noy Petchwikai's teachings. Drawing from various yoga styles, Marcel's classes range from inversions to Vinyasa flows and grounded Hatha. He aims to foster a learning environment that enhances mobility, strength, and cultivates inner peace, by connecting the breath and mind.
