Standing Asana Foundations with Marcel Erasmus

ABOUT

Standing Asana Foundations is a focused, practical 3‑hour workshop designed to give beginner to intermediate students clear, usable alignment principles for the standing poses they’ll encounter most often in Hatha and Vinyasa classes. Through short, accessible lectures, hands‑on demonstrations, and guided practice, participants will learn how to stack joints, find stable balance, and move safely between common standing shapes so they can practice with confidence and build a reliable technical base for their yoga journey.

Intro and overview

This workshop is for students who want solid fundamentals rather than flashy variations. We’ll break down the mechanics behind poses such as Mountain, Warrior I and II, Triangle, Extended Side Angle, Chair, Crescent Lunge, Half Moon, and basic balancing postures. Emphasis is on alignment cues you can use immediately in class, simple progressions and regressions, and how to adapt poses using props so every body can access the benefits.

What participants will gain

  • Clear alignment principles for joint stacking, hip and shoulder orientation, and neutral spine.
  • Practical cues to improve balance, stability, and efficient weight distribution.
  • Safe transition strategies for moving between standing poses in vinyasa flow.
  • Modifications and prop use to make poses accessible and to support progression.
  • Confidence and a short home practice to reinforce learning after the workshop.

Marcel Erasmus

Marcel discovered yoga in 2012 while recovering from a skateboarding injury and it became a stabilising force in his life. To deepen his practice, he completed 200-hour teacher trainings in India and Hong Kong, and was influenced by Patrick Creelman and Noy Petchwikai's teachings. Drawing from various yoga styles, Marcel's classes range from inversions to Vinyasa flows and grounded Hatha. He aims to foster a learning environment that enhances mobility, strength, and cultivates inner peace, by connecting the breath and mind.
